You might not have heard of me — whether you live in Texas or not. That’s because I’m not some big city politician. In fact, I’m not a politician at all.

Let me introduce myself: I’m Laura Jones. A Native Texan. A mother. A wife. A working business woman.

Although I’m not a politician like I said, I have experience in public service. I’ve served as the County Chair for the San Jacinto County Democrats, as well as the Field Director for Texas Senate District 3 under the Non-Urban Rural Caucus within the Texas Democratic Party.

At the end of the day, I’m just an ordinary member of the community here in Texas’ 8th Congressional District. I was born and raised in Houston, and it wasn’t until I moved to rural Texas myself that I had any idea of the unique struggles that exist in the countryside regions due to lack of proper representation.

Having lived in both urban and rural neighborhoods, I have a deep understanding and empathy for the distinct problems that different people in different regions face in their daily lives.

While many important issues overlap — like infrastructure development, public funding, and combatting the effects of the climate crisis — politicians tend to only focus on metropolitan concerns and fail to recognize the unique impacts that these challenges have on rural communities.

That’s why, when I make it to Congress, I will ensure that rural Texans are no longer neglected in favor of major cities. I am determined to fight for legislation that will address flood mitigation, strengthen public education, and provide quality healthcare — because I know that living in small-town America can often mean being hundreds of miles from access to essential resources, reliable broadband internet, medical facilities, and more.
