Just be present. Live in the moment. Easier said than done, right? Right. You don’t deny the mindfulness approach or its upside. It’s no-tech. It slows you down. And, when you follow it, it keeps you calm — or at least calmer — with your spouse, kids, and work. But you don’t have gobs of time to devote to it. A fair point. But here’s the thing: Being in the moment doesn’t have to be an all-the-time thing. It can’t be. It should, however, be something you try occasionally because it has serious benefits for you and your family.

TIPS AND TRICKS

Want to Be a Bit More Mindful? Act Like a Child
No, we’re not talking about throwing tantrums or taking 45 minutes to eat a muffin. What we mean is, try to notice more. Kids are good at noticing. They look at the world with a sense of wonder and take it all in. Ever see a child run their hand on a blade of grass? They’re not thinking about anything but that grass. So, spend some time every now and then purposely paying attention to what your kid is paying attention to and, well, pay attention to it as well. Chances are you’ll notice a lot more.

Here’s some more advice for slowing yourself down and seeing the world like a kid.

TIPS AND TRICKS

How to Help a Baby Nap on Schedule

  1. Make sure that the baby knows the difference between bright noisy daytime and quiet dark night time by keeping the environment day and night appropriate.

  2. Develop a routine that will give the baby clues that it’s almost naptime, including a diaper change, a story, and a feeding.

  3. It’s okay to wake a sleeping baby to keep them on an optimal schedule, particularly if it means getting the baby fed and making sure everyone can get sleep.

Getting a baby to nap on a schedule requires planning, forethought, and a good routine. Here’s what to keep in mind.
