Hey there --

I’m sure you get a bunch of emails. So, every email we send you from Accountable Tech we want to be relevant and important for your time and attention.

Today, I wanted to share two stories of how Facebook continues to get away with bald-faced lies as they try to distract from all their scandals recently in the news. Take a look at the reality of these recent announcements:

Earlier this month, Facebook announced they would stop using their facial recognition technology, but Facebook’s newly renamed parent company, Meta, is not. This means that Instagram, WhatsApp, and other companies owned by Meta are still using facial recognition software. Like most announcements from Facebook, it’s all a self-serving PR stunt. In fact, Meta is actively exploring how to use biometrics as they construct their metaverse.

Next, Meta announced they’d be removing thousands of sensitive ad-targeting categories, including race, health, and political affiliation to reduce the discriminatory and dangerous targeting of minority groups. But Facebook’s ad-serving algorithm still allows for the dangerous hyper-targeting of individuals on the platform. Per usual, Facebook’s announcement is not the same as reality.

Whether it’s Facebook or Meta, we must be careful to take them at their word. We’ve seen Facebook executives lie to Congress. We cannot let them off the hook for profiting off your personal information and fueling violence, insurrection, and genocide around the world.

Chip in to support our work as we fight to hold Facebook accountable and call out their BS. [[link removed]] We can’t let them get away with this.

Thanks for being with us,

Jesse
