Dear Angelenos,

Tomorrow is the first day of the Strength and Love, The City of Angels’ COVID-19 Memorial.

Please join us Thursday, November 18 through Saturday, November 20 to:

  • HONOR those who held our city together during the pandemic by clapping with your friends and neighbors on Thursday, November 18 at 8 p.m.

  • REMEMBER those we have lost to the pandemic by lighting a candle in your window on Friday, November 19 at 8 p.m.

  • MOBILIZE to give back to our communities and work together to build a stronger and more resilient city by waving a flashlight or phone light outside to make L.A. shine on Saturday, November 20 at 8 p.m.

This memorial will give us an opportunity to reflect on our collective experience during this pandemic, recognize the resiliency of our city, and come together to create a better future for every Angeleno.

Please share your experiences during this 3-day virtual event by posting on social media using #StrengthandLoveLA.

In addition to our nightly activities, you can participate in the memorial by:

  • Planning your visit to the memorial installation at the Griffith Observatory. As part of our memorial, a white flag installation is open to the public on the front lawn of Griffith Observatory to commemorate the nearly 27,000 people we’ve lost to COVID-19 in L.A. County. It will be open to the public now through November 22 from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m.

  • Stepping outside to see buildings around the city light up blue at sunset. City hall and buildings across the city will light up blue nightly to commemorate our collective and individual experiences during the pandemic from November 18-20.
  • Sharing your experiences and participation in the memorial on social media. Use the digital tool kit to post about who you will be honoring and remembering and how you are mobilizing for L.A. Access digital tool kit here. Don’t forget to post online and tag #StrengthandLoveLA.

  • Download and share FREE Strength and Love posters! Show L.A. love by displaying the posters in your home or business window. You can also print the posters and fill in who you are honoring, who you are remembering, and what you are mobilizing for during the memorial. You can download them here.

This memorial holds a unique and significant meaning to every Angeleno — whether you've lost a loved one to the virus, stepped up as a frontline worker, or helped your friends, family, and neighbors during the pandemic.

During this time, let us unite as one community and commemorate our collective and varied experiences. As we reflect on what we’ve endured and lost, we can also recognize how far we’ve come since last year.

I hope that you can join your fellow Angelenos during this 3-day virtual event and beyond to create a more united, resilient Los Angeles.
