34th European Green Party Council

The 34th European Green Party (EGP) Council is quickly approaching! With less than 3 weeks to go, we invite you to register now to attend the first in-person council since the start of the pandemic.

The democratic backsliding we are witnessing in Hungary and across Europe is harming opportunities for all citizens and has proven to be, so far, a difficult challenge for the European Union. But there is hope! In Hungary, a united opposition is heading towards the 2022 elections with the goal of restoring democratic standards, fighting corruption, and rebuilding the social fabric.

We will update you soon on the final list of sessions and speakers.

Green leaders push for more climate ambition at COP26

Green leaders gathered on 31 October -12 November in Glasgow for the UNFCCC's 26th Conference of the Parties (COP26), which is the climate summit that coordinates the global response to the climate crisis.

This year's COP was the biggest ever and addressed some of the issues left unsolved in the 2015 Paris Agreement, such as the global carbon market. Some of the most debated issues included international climate finance, increasing the ambition of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), and phasing out fossil fuels.

For the first time, over 100 Greens including young climate activists and members of the Global South were part of the observer delegations, and 7 Green climate ministers were part of the negotiations.

The Green Screen: stream ‘The 8th' for free. Ireland’s campaign to remove the Eighth Amendment which effectively banned abortion

On November 17-18, you can watch the documentary ‘The 8th' by Aideen Kane, Lucy Kennedy and Maeve O'Boyle from Ireland. The 8th tells the story of the Irish women and their fight to overturn one of the most restrictive abortion bans in the world. After a 35-year struggle the pro-choice side radically shift tactics to try to bring an historically conservative electorate over the line.

Following the screening of the documentary film ‘The 8th’, we are hosting a debate on Thursday 18 November at 19:30 CEST. This month is dedicated to reflecting about the Rule of Law as the critical instrument that creates the framework through which our democracies happen. The debate is moderated by Dr Sam Murray, Music Lecturer and EGP Amendments Committee Member, with an introduction by Mar Garcia, Secretary General, European Green Party.

Speakers:

  • Ailbhe Smyth, Campaigner, Co-Director Together for Yes

  • Mina Jack Tolu, Freelance Strategic Communications Consultant. International Secretary of the Maltese Greens - ADPD

  • Gwendoline Delbos-Corfield, Greens/EFA Member of the European Parliament

  • Raphael Bossong, Researcher, Senior Associate, Stiftung Wissenschaft & Politik

Verdes Equo gathering more than 500,000 signatures to force a vote on protecting Mar Menor in the Spanish Parliament

Mar Menor is a unique coastal saltwater lagoon in the Iberian Peninsula of Spain. It is home to a wide variety of marine creatures, such as sea horses. These creatures have been poisoned by the discharge of polluting products such as nitrates and sewage, which has been exacerbated by flooding.

At the end of October, representatives of our member party Verdes Equo and NGO ILP MAR MENOR brought more than 500,000 signatures needed to force a vote on protecting Mar Menor in the Spanish Parliament! Congratulations to Verdes Equo, as well as NGOs and civil society on this big win for wildlife and biodiversity.
