 ISSUE 6 | NOVEMBER 17, 2021 | FAIRFAX COUNTY, VA

Hello Fairfax Young Dems!

In this newsletter, you will find information about:
  • Fairfax 101
  • Joining the Fairfax County Democratic Committee (FCDC)
  • Upcoming events
  • How to submit your own announcements
But first, a word from FYD Co-President Bokar Cherif:

Good Morning Fellow Fairfax YDs!
I would like to take a moment to personally thank all of our members who stepped up to run for office, and those who took time out of their busy schedules to volunteer for candidates up and down the ticket. Despite not getting the outcome we wanted on election night the hard work from all of us spurred record breaking turnout in a Gubernatorial election and I'm proud of that.
As we accept the fallout from the election I want to center self-care in my message to you all. This campaign season was particularly exhausting and I want to encourage all of you to recharge in whichever way works for you. The executive team and I are here to help you process this experience in as positive a way possible given the circumstances. For our members who need a break, feel free! Get some rest, my team and I will be happy to welcome you whenever you feel ready to get back to it. To those who prefer turning angst into activism, please come to our Fairfax 101, and participate in our upcoming holiday events, we would love to see you!
Politics is about people, politics is about community, and I think we are going to need each other over these next few years. I look forward to showing this new Governor what Fairfax Young Democrats can do! If you have any questions or concerns don't hesitate to reach out.

Democratically Yours,
Bokar "Bo" Cherif

Special FYD Meeting: Fairfax 101

Join the Fairfax Young Democrats as they break down the operation of Fairfax County. How does the Board work? How do they work with the School Board? Where does your money go? Where does the County have jurisdiction over the state?

Come and hear an interactive presentation on Saturday, November 19 at the City of Fairfax Regional Library. Our event kicks off at 11:00 AM. We will be meeting in person and will ask everyone attending to wear masks. We also will be live streaming the event.

Message us if you have any questions.

Applications Open for FCDC

Applications are open for membership on the Fairfax County Democratic Committee (FCDC)! You can apply to be a Voting or Associate Member of the FCDC here: fairfaxdemocrats.org/join

At our September meeting, we adopted a resolution laying out the composition of the FCDC for the 2022-2023 biennium and structure of our reorganization process. Here's how it'll work:

  • November 9, 2021: Any resident of Fairfax County, age 13 or older, can apply for Membership on the FCDC. There are two types of membership, both considered to be full members of the Committee:
    • Voting: Required to attend a meeting once every 120 days, has the ability to vote on motions, can serve as officers of the Committee. Limited to 130 per Supervisor (Magisterial) District.
    • Associate: No attendance requirement, cannot vote on motions or serve as officers, can be members of Caucuses and participants of Standing Committees. No limit on the number allowed at the County or District level.
  • December 1 at 5pm: Membership applications must be complete by this time to participate in the FCDC Reorganization process.
    • NOTE: the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors is expected to set new district boundaries at their December 7th meeting that may move some applicants from one Supervisor District to another.
  • December 9 - 11: Where necessary, virtual caucuses are held in which the registered voters of Fairfax County may vote to fill the contested seats of the 130 voting members in each District. Caucuses will only be held if the number of applicants for the district exceeds 130, or if the election of a candidate is opposed.
    • This step will be skipped if 130 or fewer people apply for FCDC Voting Membership from any one Supervisor District. Associate Members do not factor into this count.
  • December 11 - 18: The District Committees convene their own reorganization meetings where they will elect their 2022-2023 leadership and vote in any Associate Members. Keep an eye on the FCDC Calendar for the dates, times, and how to join these meetings.
  • January 11, 2022: The FCDC convenes a reorganization meeting in which the officers for the 2-year term are elected and bylaws amendments are considered by the Voting Membership.
Apply for Membership

Please feel free to respond to this email or reach out to me or our Executive Director, Jack Kiraly ([email protected]), directly with any questions about this process.
