If we had to pick one vanity muscle for your back, it would be the trapezius. This long and triangular muscle rides from the base of your neck, across your scapula, out to your shoulder tips, then down your spine to your mid-back. Given the real estate it covers, it’s no wonder it can give your upper back awesome definition when properly flexed. Of course, the trapezius isn’t just a vanity muscle. It helps with just about every upright movement you want to perform — from carrying kids to bringing in the groceries, to moving furniture around or changing light bulbs. Pretty important, which is why it shouldn’t be neglected. The workout below makes sure of that.

TIPS AND TRICKS

Two Stretches to Do More often

The Frog Stretch

Consider this the inverse of the butterfly stretch — and it’s an amazing release for your hips. Laying on your stomach, bring the soles of your feet together, drawing them upwards towards your back so that your knees splay outwards. Hold for 10-60 seconds.

Cobbler Pose

Sitting down, bring the soles of your feet together so that your knees splay out to the side. (If you have a child enrolled in ballet, they’ll be familiar with this pose, otherwise known as a butterfly.) Bend forward from the hips. You’ll get a deeper stretch moving only slightly forward with a flat back than you will if you touch your head to your toes with a curved spine. Hold for 10-60 seconds.

These moves are intended to open your hips and help keep you injury free. Here are a few more to add to your routine.

Daily Appreciations Make a Happy Marriage
A simple note, text message, or compliment go a long way. In fact, according to Jonathan Robinson, couple’s therapist and author More Love, Less Conflict: A Communication Playbook for Couples, expressing appreciation and generally acknowledging a significant other’s efforts is a core trait of happy couples. “The number one correlation with happiness in couples is the number of appreciations they give to each other,” he says. So, go ahead: make their day.
