Remembrance Sunday 🕊
WE WILL REMEMBER THEM:

Here are the details for this Remembrance Sunday’s events and services across the Denton and Reddish constituency.

I will be at Denton, Thornley Park and Dukinfield and I have asked representatives to lay wreaths at Haughton Green, Reddish, Stockport and Audenshaw on my behalf.
AUDENSHAW:
Service and wreath-laying in Audenshaw Cemetery at 3pm.

DENTON:
Central
Parade assembles at Denton Working Men’s Club, Grosvenor Street, at 10am and heads to Market Street remembrance garden to lay wreath. Then goes via Denton Town Hall to the Cenotaph in Victoria Park for service of remembrance at 10.45am.
Denton West
Wreath-laying in Thornley Park at 1.30pm.
Haughton Green
Service in St Mary’s Church at 10.30am followed by wreath-laying.

DUKINFIELD:
Central
Parade leaves Dukinfield Town Hall at 2.45pm for service and wreath-laying at Chapel Hill memorial at 3pm.
Tame Valley
Service hosted by 5th/7th Dukinfield (St John’s) Scouts at Tame Valley War Memorial in Dukinfield Cemetery at 11am.

HEATON NORRIS:
The parade meets at Grafton Street Park at 10.55am. The Act of Remembrance in Grafton Street Park starts at 11am. The service at Christ with All Saints Church, Heaton Norris begins at 11.30am.

REDDISH:
The church Service at St. Mary’s Church takes place at 10.30am. The service at the War Memorial takes place at 12.15pm. The service proceeds to Willow Grove Cemetery at 12.45.

** Gwynne highlights shocking cuts to local public health services
------------------------------------------------------------

Andrew Gwynne, MP for Denton and Reddish, has highlighted the shocking level of Government cuts to local public health services in the last five years.

Analysis from the Labour party and verified by the House of Commons Library has found that Stockport and Tameside have lost £3.11m and £2.79m respectively in funding for local public health services over the last five years. This equates to a real terms funding cut of 16% for Stockport and 15.1% for Tameside.

Cuts to Stockport and Tameside’s public health budgets have meant that public health teams have had to make difficult decisions about where they spend their money, alongside carrying out vital work to control the spread of Covid-19, including local outbreak planning, and crucially, promotional work to support the vaccine rollout.

In 2021/22, public health teams in England also took on responsibility for costs associated with the provision of the anti-HIV drug pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), and services related to it.

Local public health teams are also responsible for stop smoking services, sexual health services, health checks, public mental health, drug and alcohol services, children’s public health services, programmes to tackle obesity, amongst other key public health programmes.

The real terms cut to the team’s funding fails to prioritise this vital work, despite public health staff having spent almost two years working flat out to tackle the worst public health crisis in living memory.

In last month’s Autumn Budget and Spending Review, the Government announced no real terms change to the total public health grant, which means no more funding for local public health teams in 2022/23.

Commenting, Andrew Gwynne said:

“I know just how hard the public health teams in Stockport and Tameside have worked to keep us safe during the pandemic. The fact that they have essentially been abandoned by the Government over the last 5 years is disgraceful.

I’m fed up of hearing the words ‘levelling up’ at every term, but rarely seeing the kind of action required to make this a reality. If the last year and a bit has taught us anything, it’s that proper public health funding is not only key to giving us the tools to tackle major health crisis’ when they occur, but also making sure that people across Denton and Reddish lead healthier lives.

Jonathan Ashworth, Shadow Secretary of State for Health and Social Care added:

“Our NHS is in crisis and patients are waiting longer for treatment thanks to years of Tory cuts and a failure to recruit the doctors and nurses needed.

In communities across the country the Tories have cut the vital public health services that prevent people becoming seriously ill, ultimately putting more pressure on local hospitals.

To save lives we need to keep people well, but instead public health services are set to be stretched again thanks to this Conservative government.”


** Gwynne calls on Government to support tidal stream green energy

------------------------------------------------------------

Andrew Gwynne, MP for Denton and Reddish, has added his name to a cross-party letter to the Prime Minister calling on the Government to support tidal stream energy.

Tidal stream generators use moving water to power turbines, and can convert kinetic energy into valuable electricity. It is hoped that tidal stream generation will play a significant part in helping the UK meet its net zero targets.

The letter was organised by the Liberal Democrat MP Alistair Carmichael, and was backed by politicians from all major political parties. Specifically, the letter calls for ‘ring-fenced’ funding in the upcoming Contract for Difference auction.

These auctions are part of the Government’s fiscal policies to support the commercialisation of green energy technology. The letter notes with some concern that ‘despite the UK’s world-leading position in tidal stream energy development, these technologies are not currently included in the Government’s draft framework for the next auction’.

Gwynne and other parliamentarians are now urging the Prime Minister to reconsider the Government’s position and give proper support to the green technology.

Commenting on his support for the campaign, Andrew Gwynne said:

“As COP26 comes to a close, it’s really important that the Government provides the necessary support to green technologies so that we can build for the future. Tidal stream energy has the potential to make a massive difference to our net zero targets, and it really is a no-brainer for the Government to back it.

All we are asking the Government to do is give the same opportunity to tidal stream that it has given to offshore wind. We should be leading the way in innovative leadership on green technology.

I hope that the Prime Minister recognises that this is not a party-political issue. We must work across the aisle to do what is best for generations to come.”

** Remembrance Poppies
------------------------------------------------------------
So earlier this week on Facebook on one of the Denton sites, there was a post complaining about the lack of remembrance poppies around the town this year.

I contacted Tameside Council who only had 10 in stock (they’ve put them on all their bin wagons this year)… so a quick order on Amazon Prime for red plastic sheets and black sticky-back plastic, and like Blue Peter, “here’s 45 I made earlier” with Councillor Allison Gwynne ([link removed]) .

Yesterday we went around Denton and placed some outside my office, in Jubilee Square, at the Remembrance Gardens, and at the Cenotaph entrance to Victoria Park.

I’d have liked to have done more but ran out of plastic. I hope it’s made the town centre that bit more poignant for Remembrance Sunday.

** Denton Community College pays tribute to our fallen
------------------------------------------------------------
Thank you to Denton Community College ([link removed]) for inviting me and Councillor Allison Gwynne ([link removed]) on Wednesday to meet with Product Design students who’ve made plastic display poppies, fabric poppies to wear, and a stunning wooden soldier display at the school entrance (they’ve also made one for the Stamford Unit at Tameside Hospital).

What great tributes to our fallen. Thank you.


** Messy Church at St Elisabeth's Church, Reddish 🎨

We had lots of fun on Sunday evening at Lyle’s first ever Messy Church at St Elisabeth's Church, Reddish ([link removed]) .

He made a salt dough candle holder, a card and a crepe paper stained glass window. There was a snack time and we ended with a sparkler outside.

Great fun had by all (including Grandma and Grandad!)

** Remembering loved ones at St Mary's Parish Church, Heaton Reddish ✝️
------------------------------------------------------------
Thank you to St. Mary's Parish Church, Heaton Reddish for kindly inviting me to their service to remember loved ones, which is especially important after the loss of so many to COVID19.
It was an absolutely beautiful service and my pleasure to be there with the South Reddish congregation this morning.


** Ted's Adventure Through Time 🕰🧸

Some of you might remember Ted’s adventures on Facebook throughout the pandemic. He’s the creation of Denton Local History Society member, Florence Oliver.

So what better for the Society’s exhibition this year? All the “Teds” she created.

** The House of Commons Constituency Garden of Remembrance
------------------------------------------------------------
On Tuesday, I laid my memorial cross in the House of Commons Constituency Garden of Remembrance.

This is the first time we’ve had this. It’s an idea of the new Speaker, Sir Lindsay Hoyle. 650 memorial markers will be laid to commemorate all those lives lost in two world wars and in conflicts since.
MPs were also asked to use their marker to commemorate specific people from their constituencies. I dedicated mine to three:

• Albert Hill VC - Denton’s Great War hero.
• Joseph Lister VC - Reddish’s Great War hero.
• Lance Corporal Andrew Breeze, killed in Afghanistan in 2010.


** #FreeNazanin
------------------------------------------------------------
Earlier this week, I visited the Foreign Office where Richard Ratcliffe, the husband of Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe was on day 17 of his second hunger strike. He is now on day 20.

His last one was in 2019 outside the Iranian Embassy. Here we are, all these years later and no further on. I implore on British Ministers (and the Prime Minister who has some responsibility for Nazanin’s current plight) and the Iranian authorities to do the right thing. Let’s bring Nazanin home.

The placard we are holding in the photograph below was designed by their beautiful daughter. It was also my privilege to meet - and have a long chat with - Richard’s amazing mum.
📺 WATCH: At DWP Questions I refer to the Ombudsman’s report into maladministration on the issue of the 1950s women’s pensions. The Government was urged to proactively cooperate with the Ombudsman in the next stages. I’ll let you judge from the Minister’s reply!

📺 WATCH: At Justice Questions I urge the Lord Chancellor to do more to improve the justice system for victims of rape and sexual offences. The current statistics - in terms of numbers of cases, numbers of charges and numbers of convictions - are shocking. We can and must do better.

📺 WATCH: Given the worrying increase in tensions in Bosnia and Herzegovina, we have an Urgent Question on the Government’s actions in trying to prevent more unnecessary bloodshed in the Balkans. It’s a massive test for the West, but not something we can afford to ignore.
