Long before I ever considered jumping into politics, I've been hard at work to make sure that every single one of us has access to high-quality healthcare when we need it. Whether it was miracle kids whose life-threatening injury or illness brought them to Boson Children's Hospital, HIV positive elders who'd lost so many community members but who were able to find support and treatment at San Francisco AIDS Foundation, or Planned Parenthood patients whose health care was constantly being politicized and attacked by right wing conservatives. This pandemic has illuminated a lot of things — especially the wide gaps in our healthcare system.
Sometimes it feels like we’re at war for accessible, affordable, affirming healthcare services.

Over the last few years, we have won some really important battles. We’ve expanded Medicaid benefits to growing families and people with disabilities; we've protected reproductive health services for college students and trans Washingtonians; we’ve secured long term care options to help older folks stay safely in their homes for longer; and we’ve created the Universal Healthcare Commission -- the strongest universal health care legislation in the nation.

But we can’t get comfortable —the war rages on. In the 2022 session I’ll be focused on making sure all Washingtonians have access to healthcare that’s more accessible and more affordable. One way to do that? Pass the Keep Our Care Act which will require stronger oversight of health system mergers and acquisitions. This bill won't undo what happened with Harrison Hospital, or with the recent Virginia Mason/Franciscan merger, but it will allow Washingtonians more future protections — so that no hospital system's religious directives or business bottom line stands in the way of anyone receiving access to the full range of healthcare we all deserve.
