Hi John,

November is National Diabetes Month, so today I wanted to write to you about my family’s experience with this life-threatening disease and why I’m committed to advocating for affordable and accessible health care.

For those of you who don’t know, my son and my wife both have Type-1 Diabetes, and we live with those challenges every day.

For years, our family has joined the “Walk to Cure Diabetes” to raise funds and awareness for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). Several years ago I was proud to continue that support by participating remotely while deployed to Afghanistan, carrying the American flag in honor of my son who was diagnosed at just three-years-old.

I also know firsthand the struggles that far too many American families are facing within our health care system. I’ve dealt with the frustration and anxiety of skyrocketing health care costs while taking on drug companies who charged an arm and a leg for the insulin and care my family needs.

I’ve sat on the phone with insurance companies trying to navigate my son’s treatment and thought to myself, “How would I do this if I wasn’t able to take time off from work to handle it? There’s got to be a better way.”

I worry that my son, and many others with pre-existing conditions, will have to face unfair financial burdens and limited opportunities.

That’s why in Congress, I’m committed to fighting for every American’s right to high-quality, affordable, and accessible health care, because no one should have to spend hours on the phone with their insurance company to obtain life-saving medication or go bankrupt because of illness or injury.

If you’re with me, please consider making a donation to my campaign to help bring real leadership to Southeastern Pennsylvania.
