Dear John,

Until fairly recently, most people in Castine would have assumed that African Americans had never lived in town in any significant numbers. Their stories and names were definitely forgotten. But since May of 2020, the Castine Historical Society, a small non-profit museum, has been working to uncover the hidden and forgotten history of African Americans in their community. By reading town records and searching non-traditional sources, Castine residents have begun to uncover stories of the enslaved and free African Americans who lived, worked, and contributed to Castine.

Join us tomorrow, November 5, from 12-1 PM for our Friday Lunch and Learn, The Forgotten History of African Americans in Castine, Maine with Lisa Simpson Lutts, Executive Director of the Castine Historical Society, to learn more.
