John —

As the United Auto Workers labor action against General Motors comes to an end, I wanted to share with you my personal story of why I support workers and organized labor, and why I always will.

My parents met on the factory floor. Today, my father is a proud UAW member and Ford employee. The good wages and benefits my parents have been able to earn have helped them realize the American Dream. Thanks to organized labor, my dad was able to provide for me and my two siblings when we were growing up. The UAW is the reason we had access to good healthcare and the reason my parents will one day be able to retire with dignity.

But standing up for working Michiganders isn’t just about the role unions have played in my life. It’s about the work labor unions have been doing for more than a century to improve workers’ rights. Without that important work, none of us would have weekends, a 40-hour work week, workers’ safety rules, or unemployment insurance – the rights we take for granted today are precious gifts from previous generations, who fought and died for them.

And if we don’t continue that fight, we could lose all of those gains.

We must stand united against those who would roll back this progress. While dozens of Democratic elected officials joined me in supporting our union brothers and sisters on the picket line, the other side offered not a single word of support. They have made it clear that they don't have the backs of Michigan's working families.

If we fail to stand with workers, everyone loses. Labor unions increase wages and benefits for all workers, not just union members. It’s one of the reasons I’m proud to be a Democrat.

I will always stand up for working Michiganders and workers’ rights. And when we stand together, we get results.

The deal GM workers have earned and deserve is a great victory, but our fight is far from over.  It’s an honor to have your support as we fight for a better future for everyone in Michigan.

Working for you,
