October 2021

A package of bills introduced this session in the Massachusetts Senate and House would go a long way to prevent the sexual abuse of our children. S369, which would require child sexual abuse prevention education in schools and youth organizations for staff and students, was heard by the Joint Committee on Education on June 11th,

and its mirror bill in the House, H241, was heard by the Joint Committee on Children, Families and Persons with Disabilities on September 15th. Also heard on September 15th was S132, which would prohibit educator sexual misconduct and make it so that a student cannot consent to sexual relations with an educator. MassKids staff, board members and other advocates and survivors testified in favor of these bills.

Learn the Facts. Take Action.

Bring Child Safety Posters to Your School or Youth Organization

MassKids' child safety posters for schools and youth organizations encourage children to reach out to trusted adults if they ever feel unsafe where they live, learn or play. The school posters have been endorsed by the MA Association of School Superintendents and the Massachusetts School Nurse Organization.

The 11"x17" printed posters are available in quantity through MassKids (Just reply to this email or email [email protected]).

Schools or youth organizations may also download the 8.5"x11" flyer here for schools or here for youth organizations for distribution to students and to post on your organization's website.

Cummings Foundation Grant Awarded to MassKids

MassKids is one of 140 recipients of the Cummings Foundation's 2021 $25 million grant program. The $100K Cummings Grant will support Enough Abuse child sexual abuse prevention trainings for schools and youth-serving organizations in Lowell, Lynn and Medford. With support from the Parker Foundation last year, nearly 1,200 employees across Lowell's 30 public schools completed our Enough! e-learning course, and three virtual trainings for Lowell-area youth-serving organizations were held. The Cummings Grant will allow us to expand our trainings in Lowell and other Greater Lowell area communities.

The Cummings Grant will also build upon previous efforts in the city of Lynn, including a training of trainers that certified two dozen advocates to deliver Enough Abuse Campaign workshops in the community.

On Oct. 27th, the American Dream Cable Show, hosted by lawyer and community leader Jim Carrigan will feature Lynn School Superintendent Patrick Tutwiler, Lynn Economic Opportunity CEO Birgitta Damon and MassKids Director Jetta Bernier in a discussion about upcoming child sexual abuse prevention efforts in the community.

Meetings with key community leaders in Medford are scheduled this fall, including with the Mayor, School Superintendent, Chief of Police and School Committee members to plan for the launch of the Enough Abuse Campaign effort in that community.

What have schools in your community been doing to prevent child sexual abuse?

You can bring our Enough! Preventing Child Sexual Abuse course to your school. Download our flyer and brief slide deck for more information. Share them with school leaders and encourage them to request a free, no-obligation preview of the course.

Feedback from school employees remains strong and positive. As one teacher commented:

"I have been teaching for nearly 30 years and this is one of, if not the best trainings I have ever sat through. It was visually beautiful and well presented…It was powerful." Lowell Public Schools
