Citizens for Schimpf

Friend,

This week, I celebrated an industry that plays a major role in Illinois’ economic success—manufacturing. October is Manufacturing Month and it's a great way to honor a sector that includes over half a million jobs and thousands of businesses in Illinois, as well as contributing over $100 billion to our state’s annual economic output.

I was able to tour General Cable in Du Quoin, meet their hard-working employees, and hear how vital the work they do out of that plant is for the Du Quoin-area community and state when it comes to jobs and economic output.

Illinois manufacturing isn’t just crucial to our state; it’s also crucial to the nation. Illinois has been at the heart of a resurgence in American manufacturing in recent years. The only downside of this resurgence is that our state faces a significant shortfall of qualified workers to fill manufacturing positions.

In fact, research shows that Illinois may fall short by as much as 300,000 skilled manufacturing workers over the next several years. That’s why events like Manufacturing Month are so important. It’s vital that we draw attention to this pivotal sector, and, in particular, raise awareness of manufacturing as a viable, lucrative, and rewarding industry.

Manufacturing has a big footprint in Illinois and, as governor, I'm committed to making sure that the Illinois manufacturing sector remains strong for decades to come!

S/F,

Paul Schimpf

Volunteer of the Week

This week's volunteer to showcase is Becky Borgsmiller, who is our Williamson County Director. She recently traveled north to staff me at my tour of the Prysmian Group/General Cable plant in Du Quoin—taking the pictures that we posted earlier in the week.

Thank you, Becky, for your friendship and support!

As governor, I'll back common-sense, business-friendly measures that support the manufacturing industry in Illinois and will re-ignite our economy by reversing the failed, tax-and-spend policies of the Pritzker administration.
