Yesterday, Republicans blocked the Freedom to Vote Act, and made the choice to not protect the integrity of our democracy.
This transformative legislation protects our election system, expands access to the ballot box, and ensures every American can request mail-in ballots, register to vote on Election Day, and fairly participate in our electoral process.
Republicans made it clear that they’re not concerned with saving our democracy — so Democrats will have to do it alone, but we won’t get very far if Republicans continue weaponizing the filibuster to obstruct progressive legislation.

We’ve seen numerous threats to our democracy as Republican-controlled state legislatures pass stricter voter ID laws, remove ballot drop boxes from primarily Black and brown districts, and use partisan gerrymandering to manipulate the outcome of elections.
Only a few generations ago, my grandparents grew up in Jim Crow Virginia where similar tactics were used to infringe on their basic civil rights.
The assaults on our democracy are only getting worse. Now is not the time to go backward.
