Friends,
For nearly half a century, the Voting Rights Act protected all Americans’ right to vote.
But in 2013, despite it having overwhelming bipartisan support, the Supreme Court gutted the law, paving the way for state legislatures to systematically make it harder for some people -- particularly communities of color -- to participate in our democracy.
This year, the assault on voting rights reached a fever pitch, with anti-democratic laws passing in Georgia, Texas, and many other GOP-controlled states. And on January 6th, our nation witnessed the most dangerous attempt of voter disenfranchisement in our history, when a sitting president attempted to overturn the results of a free and fair election.
I’ve said from the beginning that stopping these un-American, anti-democratic efforts is of existential importance. That’s why I was proud to join Senate Democrats earlier this month in introducing the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act -- to restore the full protections of the 1965 Voting Rights Act and protect our democracy for generations to come.
This legislation would not give an advantage to either political party. All it would do is protect our elections from interference, partisan gerrymandering, dark money, and voter suppression. All Americans -- Republicans, Democrats, and Independents alike -- should support it.
Tomorrow, the Senate will take up the Freedom to Vote Act. But like all things in Washington, it’s going to take enormous grassroots support to get this done. So I’m asking you: Before tomorrow, will you add your name to our petition in support of comprehensive voting rights legislation?
In 2020, 70.9 percent of white voters cast ballots, while only 58.4 percent of nonwhite voters did. This disparity is only expected to worsen as new restrictive voting laws are being passed in states across the country.
When the voting electorate fails to represent our nation’s diversity, our democracy is weakened.
We can reverse these trends, reduce partisanship, and strengthen our democracy -- but only if we act now. So please, join me in saying you support comprehensive voting rights, and let’s fight like our democracy depends on it -- because it does.
Thanks for standing with me,
Tim Kaine
