Dear John,

Have you heard about the disturbing news out of Texas? Texas has banned abortion beyond six weeks - with no exceptions for rape or incest - and the Supreme Court formally denied a request to freeze the law, even though it violates Roe v. Wade. This means that the abortion law has gone into effect as one of the most restrictive abortion laws in the developed world. Many women are unaware that they are pregnant at six weeks and Texas's law even allows private citizens to bring civil suits against people who assist someone get an abortion, like rideshare drivers and clinicians.

The Supreme Court refusing to freeze Texas’ abortion law sets a dangerous precedent for abortion laws in the future. In Michigan, there is currently a 1931 state law on the books which criminalizes abortion. The law has not been enforced because it goes against the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision, but if Roe v. Wade were to be overturned, abortions would be criminalized in Michigan.

Sen. Erika Geiss and Rep. Kyra Bolden have introduced a bill that would end the 1931 abortion law and Governor Whitmer is in support.

I was proud to join the March for Reproductive Rights on Saturday to show my support. We need all hands on deck ([link removed]) to ensure that Michigan remains a safe place for women to easily access reproductive health services and abortions.

Best,
Donna

“Year after year, House Democrats have introduced bills to repeal Michigan’s archaic abortion ban, and year after year, Republicans have blocked those efforts. In the past, repealing this law may have been viewed as a principled gesture, but with recent attacks like the extreme anti-choice law passed in Texas, striking this void law has become a top priority. Frequent failed petition drives to outlaw abortion continue to show that a vast majority of Michiganders support the constitutional right to choose, and House Democrats will defend the right to make that personal and private medical decision.” Sept. 7, 2021 ([link removed])
