John—
Last week’s conflict surrounding the debt ceiling underscored something we’ve known for a long time: we absolutely must abolish the filibuster if we are going to get anything done for working families.
I’ll give you a timeline of what happened in a moment, but first, please add your name here to say that you support abolishing the filibuster: actions.mondaireforcongress.com/a/filibuster-petition?refcode2=27a4ddaa-df29-ec11-981f-c896653b9208
Okay, here’s what you need to know:
- September 28th: Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen says that Congress must raise the debt ceiling by October 18th to avoid default. A default would mean millions of layoffs, pensioners not receiving their checks, and federal workers and members of the military receiving reduced compensation — or no compensation at all — for their work.
- October 6th: Senate Republicans choose to filibuster instead of allowing a vote on funding the government. This is the third time in two weeks that they refused to allow a vote.
- October 8th: 11 Republicans vote with Democrats to overcome the filibuster. The Senate passes a $480 billion deal 50-48 — with not a single Republican voting yes — to fund the government through December 3rd.
Now, it’s a good thing that we avoided default in the short term.
But Mitch McConnell has already said that once December 3rd rolls around, Republicans will filibuster legislation to fund the government all over again. They’re playing politics with people’s lives, and they’ll continue this vicious cycle unless we abolish the filibuster.
Please, add your name here to say that you support abolishing the filibuster. Republicans will continue to block the passage of overwhelmingly popular legislation unless we act now: actions.mondaireforcongress.com/a/build-back-better-petition?refcode2=27a4ddaa-df29-ec11-981f-c896653b9208
Now that the $480 billion package has passed the Senate, my colleagues and I in the House will vote to advance it, and then it will go to President Biden’s desk.
I’m pleased to report that we’re avoiding a default in the short term, but the truth is that Republicans will keep holding working people hostage for no good reason until we abolish the filibuster.
Thank you for reading,
