As many as 80,000 employment-based green cards [[link removed]] are set to expire today, leaving many foreign nationals who are looking to permanently live and work in the United States in limbo. They have jobs, families, and deep roots in the U.S., but remain on temporary visas. But despite having a rare surplus of green cards, USCIS, the agency that processes green cards, ignored this opportunity to help thousands of people and instead chose to keep the decades-long backlog. This is just one more reason why we need new leaders—people like us—in positions of power to end outdated, ineffective, and unjust systems.

On Wednesday, the Senate parliamentarian rejected Democrats’ second attempt to include a pathway to citizenship for immigrants in the reconciliation package. But here’s the thing: The parliamentarian only gives advice—she doesn’t make the rules. Democratic senators have the power and responsibility to reject the parliamentarian’s guidance and pass citizenship for millions through reconciliation. Did you see the news? [[link removed]] Our #NALinNV [[link removed]] elected officials trip was such an inspiring success! Our group of 22 elected officials from other states engaged with and learned from Nevada elected officials from Clark County Schools, Las Vegas City Council, the Nevada State Senate and State Assembly, plus special visits with Governor Steve Sisolak and Congresswoman Dina Titus !

For all of us, the trip was a powerful and eye-opening testament of what's possible when you elect representative, values-aligned leaders at all levels. As one of the elected leaders noted after the trip, “You can read and hear all you want about the historic representation of Nevada's electorate, but it's not until you witness the school programs, government services, and local resources in action that you really understand them." Our visits inside of Clark County schools, the Governor's Office for New Americans, and the Courtyard Homeless Resource Center, all of which provided policy ideas to help us improve outcomes to support immigrants, refugees, and BIPOC communities across the country.
Trips like these are so important to help New American leaders learn and grow from one another as we work together to rebuild our economy and create opportunities for all of us to thrive through and after the pandemic. As Nevada Senator Mo Denis told us, “By being involved and seeing what other people are doing, we get more ideas for our office.”

NAL selects New Americans with a high potential to run for office within two years to attend the New American Candidate Fellowship. The Candidate Fellowship kicks off virtually at Ready to Win in November and ends in March 2022. The Candidate Track at Ready to Win provides media training, the opportunity to receive stump speech feedback, and strategies on how to best message to and connect with voters. This track also dives into fundraising and call time, preparing future candidates to make successful asks and determining their fundraising network.

Ready to Win has designed a unique track to prepare the next generation of women campaign leaders by diving into team management, identifying and engaging New American communities, and strategies to keep volunteers and supporters engaged. You will learn about finance rules and compliance as well as field and fundraising strategies to help your candidate win. Ready to Win will also offer you the opportunity to step into a career in campaign management with the right skills and network.
