I can see in real-time the harm we have done to our planet after decades of relentlessly abusing her with no fear of any consequences. I am a scientist and an educator by trade, and part of my job was to write these long boring reports about what is happening and the danger that awaits us. These reports would go unread; why? I first suspected that the decision-makers could not understand the intricacies of my reports, so I did my best to summarize them in straightforward layman terms.

After I did that, I realized that the people in power knew exactly what I was saying, and they live in the same area I do, and they witnessed the same things that I did, so they knew it was all true. Here is the problem: they were paid tens of millions of dollars by powerful special interests groups to look the other way. That was the final straw, and that is when I decided to put it all on the line to run as a first-time candidate in 2020 for the US House of Representatives.

One thing that no one tells you before you make the big decision to put your life on hold and run for Congress is that it is a very lonely endeavor. Yes, I am blessed and surrounded by amazing staff and supporters and a loving family, but when I am out in the community on the campaign trail, all eyes are on me, usually just waiting for me to fail or screw up.

When I first received an email in the summer of 2019 from a group called No Dem Left Behind, I was intrigued by the idea of joining forces with other candidates from across the country and working together to flip red seats blue. Looking back, I would say that was the best email I could have asked for in that campaign at that time. It changed everything. I was no longer running alone. I had peers that I could talk to, exchange ideas, and just vent from time to time because I knew they understood what I was going through.

Yes, we were able to do virtual town halls with celebrities, politicians, and social media influencers, and that was great, but it was the camaraderie that was established by being a part of No Dem Left Behind that I really loved.

I was not successful in winning my seat in 2020, but I was able to flip over 50,000 votes in 2020 for around $4/vote. That means dollars invested in our campaign were the most efficient in Florida when it came to flipping votes. In fact, we were one of only five districts in Florida to move in the Democratic direction in 2020. While the big cities were losing ground, we were gaining it.

When I decided to run again in 2022, one of my first calls was to No Dem Left Behind, and the immediate response I got from them was, "let's run it back." I know everyone is inundated with requests from donations because it's the end of the quarter, but I hope you can see what we are up against and the opportunity we have to win in 2022.
