Hey there --

Ever since it was revealed last spring that Facebook was building a version of Instagram for kids, we’ve been fighting tooth and nail to put a stop to these plans.

You might recall we emailed you this summer about the dangers of allowing children under the age of 13 access to a social media platform that fuels the spread of misinformation and undermines mental health. Together, in partnership with a coalition of groups and with your support, we’ve held Facebook’s feet to the fire and pressured them to reconsider these plans.

And Facebook has listened to us. As of today, they are officially pausing their development of Instagram for Kids!

Our work is challenging. We face an uphill fight everyday here at Accountable Tech trying to rein in some of the most powerful and profitable Big Tech companies on earth. But together, we succeeded in sending Facebook a strong and clear message that led them to change course. We couldn’t have accomplished this without your crucial support.

We’ll keep fighting until Facebook permanently abandons their plans for Instagram for kids. And we still have a lot more work cut out for us as Facebook continues to pose serious harms to other users and society at-large.

We’re rolling up our sleeves and have some exciting new programs in the works that we cannot wait to share with you soon to call out Facebook for their harms to children, public health, and our democracy. Donate $10 or whatever you can now to help us keep up the fight: [[link removed]]

Big Tech companies have plenty of lobbyists, but we have the grassroots support. Let’s keep up the fight.

Have you heard about Mark Zuckerberg’s plan to create a version of Instagram for kids 13 and under?

We’ve seen the damage Facebook and social media can wreck on adults -- the feelings of inadequacy, the overblown focus on consumerism, and the skewed self-image it creates. And that’s before we even get to the inevitable proliferation of lies, conspiracy theories, and addictive content on the platform.

Children deserve a childhood free from the grips of social media platforms like Instagram. We’re out with a new video creatively calling out Facebook’s plans to create a social media platform just for young, impressionable children.

Watch (and share) the video now to make sure Mark Zuckerberg hears us loud and clear: We don’t need Instagram for kids!
