DC Jobs with Justice at the One Nation, Working Together rally in 2010.

Friend

Twenty years ago, in 2001, I was fresh out of college, full of energy, and ready to do what it takes to make progress in the fight for justice.

It was right around that time that labor leaders in DC were creating a new organization that would unite not only labor unions but also the faith community, students, grassroots organizations, and more. That organization would become DC Jobs with Justice, and for 10 years I served as the organization’s first executive director.

Twenty years later I’m still proud to be part of the DC Jobs with Justice community, and can’t wait to celebrate the organization's 20th anniversary in October. Get your tickets to the I'll Be There Awards and join me on October 21:

DC Jobs with Justice’s first 10 years were monumental. We fought alongside UNITE HERE Local 27 to win justice for parking garage workers. We joined the nationwide Justice for Janitors campaign along with SEIU. We demanded Walmart sign community benefits agreements before coming to the District, and pushed for the RESPECT DC Large Retailer Accountability Act. That fight led to DC’s Living Wage law, which still benefits workers today.

Were you part of one or more of our campaigns between 2001 and 2011? Share a memory as part of our 20th anniversary community storytelling project:

DC Jobs with Justice has been part of the fabric of DC for 20 years and I’m extremely proud to have been there since the beginning. We’ll reflect on all this work and look ahead at the I’ll Be There Awards in October. Get your tickets today and I’ll see you there.

Sincerely,

Mackenzie Baris
