Friend,
As Republicans have gained legislative majorities in several statehouses across the country in recent years, we’ve seen an onslaught of dangerous attacks on reproductive rights. There is a concerted and ongoing effort by the GOP to take constitutional rights away from women -- and each extreme law that’s passed by Republican-led state legislatures exposes the cruelty and contempt that lies at the heart of these efforts.
The new Texas abortion ban is no exception. Under SB-8 -- which effectively bans abortions after six weeks of pregnancy, sooner than many people even realize they’re pregnant -- citizens are actually encouraged to become bounty hunters against their neighbors.
According to the new law, any person who “aids and abets” a woman accessing constitutionally protected reproductive rights could be hit with ruinous ten-thousand dollar fines. This could include an Uber driver who gives her a ride to a clinic, or a friend who lends her cash to help pay for the procedure.
Roe v. Wade has been settled U.S. policy for nearly five decades, protecting women’s rights to make their own health care decisions with their doctors and families. But far too many extremists in states all across the country are trying to effectively overturn that policy -- so it’s time for Congress to act by codifying Roe’s protections into federal law.
I’m a proud co-sponsor of the Women’s Health Protection Act, which does just that. It won’t be easy to pass, but this is too important to simply stand by. Today, I’m asking you to join me by adding your name in support of this critical legislation.
The right to make your own personal health decisions (rather than have the government make those decisions for you) is not real if only certain people in our country with a certain set of privileges can access that right -- so the Women’s Health Protection Act addresses these extreme attacks by creating a right for health care providers to provide abortion care, and a corresponding right for their patients to receive that care, free from government restrictions.
Since Texas passed its draconian law, GOP officials in at least seven states, including Arkansas, Florida, South Carolina, and South Dakota, have suggested they may review or amend their states’ laws to mirror Texas, and many other states could follow suit.
We cannot let a cruel effort to control women spiral into states across America -- the right to make her own health care decisions must be afforded to every single woman in our country.
I’m committed to continuing to fight for reproductive rights in Congress, and I’m grateful to you for joining me in that fight.
