I have good news, John. Earlier today, the House held a hearing on H.R. 2694, the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act! This is a crucial step forward, showing that your messages to legislators have truly moved the needle on workplace protections for pregnant people. And since this bill has bipartisan support, there's a strong chance that it can break through the gridlock we're used to in Congress and build the momentum it needs to pass.
Help us keep building that momentum by sending a message urging your representative to co-sponsor H.R. 2694 today — because no one should be forced to choose between a paycheck and a healthy pregnancy.
Thanks for taking action!
John—
Earlier this week, presidential candidate Sen. Elizabeth Warren was in the news because a conservative publication “proved” her story about being fired for getting pregnant while she was a teacher was untrue — because the school didn’t write, “Fired for getting pregnant” in its records.1
Which, as we all know, is exactly how pregnancy discrimination works.
Sorry for the sarcasm, John, but it’s clear that some people just don’t understand the realities that people who become pregnant in the workforce face.2,3
Pregnancy discrimination happened in the 1970s, and it still happens all the time. We know this is true: social media users confirmed it with an outpouring of stories, pushing back on The Washington Free Beacon’s ridiculous suggestion that when people are fired, overlooked for promotions, and pushed out of their career trajectories for being pregnant, companies just write it down in their board meeting minutes.4
Let’s do something about it — call on your representative to co-sponsor H.R. 2694, the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act, and help put an end to discrimination against pregnant workers!
Pregnancy discrimination was wrong in 1971 and it’s wrong today, and the lack of progress we’ve made to prevent it is unacceptable. We can and must do better for workers, women, and families.
Tell your representative to co-sponsor H.R. 2694.
Thanks for fighting with us,
Stephanie Yost Senior Legislative Counsel, NARAL Pro-Choice America
