Texas's governor has had a big September. He started the month signing a virtual abortion ban into law, then follow that by passing a collection of voter suppression laws under the guide of "election security" last week.

These laws are attacks on the civil liberties of Texans. More than that, they are attacks on underserved people in Texas. Policies like criminalizing abortion or banning 24 hour voting will have the most serious consequences for raciailly diverse and low income communities.

Worst of all, other states might see the Texas legislature's success as a greenlight to pass similar laws.

That's why it's more important than ever to fight for free and fair elections — so we can use democracy to get people who support archaic policies like these out of office. Automatic voter registration and universal mail-in ballots will go a long way in making that happen.
