On this 20th commemoration of the attacks on 9/11, we honor the heroism, sacrifice, and selfless service of first responders, and all those whom answered the call to service while our Nation was under attack.
On this day of grief and remembrance, it is important for every citizen of our Nation to recognize the needed unity of effort in the challenges of our era. The United States has weathered existential threats in the past. Today we face domestic terrorism, insurrection, extremism, the climate crisis, the pandemic, vast economic inequality, and a new arms race.
The effects of the climate crisis present greater threats to life than terrorism, and we live in a world driven by “great power politics” verses the good of mankind.
We desperately need leadership in Congress that understands the capabilities and limitations of military force.
We cannot withdraw from the world stage. Nor can we use our military forces to influence non-military objectives. Civil, domestic, economic, and diplomatic efforts should be state department missions. We must bring Nations together in close collaboration to ensure greater economic interdependence while rapidly addressing the pandemic and climate crisis.
The detrimental effects of our reactions to 9/11 taught us that we must ensure our actions honor the service and sacrifice of our citizens, and that they uphold the values and ideals which this Nation holds dear.
On this day of remembrance, take a moment to reflect on the Nation we were, and the Nation we want to become. Then consider the quality of leaders that we need to get there. Together, we can live up to the America we have always promised ourselves.
With a heavy heart but a spirit of optimism, I write to you today! America’s best days are still ahead! The spirit of heroism, selflessness, sacrifice, and honor displayed by the hero’s of 9/11 will never be forgotten.
Together we will can and will build a better tomorrow for future generations!
