September 11 is a day that we will all remember for the rest of our lives. It was a day when our lives changed.
I was a young officer in the military at the time, I was stationed in NC, getting ready to be deployed to Kosovo when I got the news. As I watched like all of you the second plane hit the twin towers, I knew that was no accident and that our lives would be changed forever. In the days following, America united, and for a short period of time, we were all patriots that put our partisanship on the sideline.
What I later came to realize is for many Americans from the Muslim faith they were experiencing a completely different set of reality. Muslim Americans, like everyone else, were suffering the agony of watching our country attacked, meanwhile they were themselves attacked for nothing more than their faith. The terrorists that attacked us divided us, and that is what really hurts.
We as Americans have a conflicted history. On the one hand we, have our moments where we shine, and many I would even say most of us September 11 was that time. Yet there are some of us who used that time to spread hatred and bigotry, and they got a free pass.
Today is a time of reflection for all of us to recognize that we can be great if we unite and embrace our neighbors and love one another. On this day, I ask you to say a prayer for the lives lost, and to pray for our country.
Airborne,
Richard Ojeda
