The legislation that Texas Republicans passed this year which prohibits abortions as early as six weeks — before most women even know that they are pregnant — wouldn’t be law.

And the legislation that allows private citizens to sue abortion providers would not have passed.

It’s clear that if we already had power in the South, a women’s right to an abortion in Texas wouldn’t have been destroyed.

That’s why Flipping the South, in Texas and other states where Democrats haven’t competed for years is so vitally important.

Since 2013, DFA has pushed forward our multi-year strategy to reclaim Republican-led state legislatures.

In 2019, we successfully completed our multi-cycle effort in Virginia, resulting in Democratic control of all statewide offices, including Governor, and both the Virginia House of Delegates and the Senate. In 2020/21, we flipped Georgia for Biden and control of the US Senate with Warnock and Ossoff.

But our work is far from done.

That’s why this year we have launched our Flip the South campaign, with the goal of achieving the same outcome we delivered in Virginia and Georgia throughout states in the south, including Texas.

Right now, our electoral team is working hard to recruit, train, and support candidates throughout the south that will fight Republicans on the local, state, and federal levels.

DFA is on the ground working to register new voters, building a broad coalition, and supporting our candidates as they build the inclusive campaigns needed to Flip the South.

Texas is one of the many states where we can replace extremist Republicans with progressive Democrats. That’s why we are building up our Flip the South program as we head into 2022.
