During last week’s hurricane, many of my constituents experienced flooding in their homes, lost power, and were unable to access public transportation. In total, nearly 20 people in New York State died; I was devastated to hear that three of those individuals were residents of my district.
Our country’s aging infrastructure only contributes to the problem of climate disaster. If we do not mobilize the resources necessary to overhaul housing and public transportation in accordance with climate change, we will only see more unnecessary suffering.

These infrastructure improvements are a key aspect of the Green New Deal, and it’s on us to pass them as soon as possible to prevent any more unnecessary loss of life. In New York City, several individuals died because flooding trapped them in basement apartments. This is completely unconscionable, and we can’t let it happen again.
The truth is that the climate crisis is already here, and we are not prepared for the destruction that will come.
I’ve talked extensively about decarbonization and holding companies that contribute to pollution accountable, but we also need a massive overhaul of infrastructure to keep people safe in the short term.
