Happy Labor Day, John.

Today we honor the accomplishments of the hard-working men and women who fought tirelessly to improve working conditions for people all across this country. It's because of their efforts that we get to enjoy a 40-hour work week, no child labor, safe working conditions, overtime pay, Social Security, and anti-discrimination laws.

While it might not seem like it, labor unions and democracy go hand in hand.

FDR once said, "We have come to a clear realization of the fact that true individual freedom cannot exist without economic security and independence.” Labor unions have fought for decades to provide individuals with the economic security they deserve. Their work has helped both mold and bolster our nation's democracy.

But the fascism we're seeing from many of our elected officials today is troubling for the future of organized labor.

Fascism and organized labor can't co-exist, so it's no surprise why Republicans in the Treason Caucus are trying to block pro-worker legislation. Earlier this year, Democrats in the House passed the PRO Act -- a bill that would provide protections for workers trying to organize. This bill is labor unions' biggest legislative priority this year, but only five Republicans voted to pass it.

Republicans in Congress are continuing to prove they're not on the side of workers. So long as they remain in office, organized labor and our democracy remain at risk.

This Labor Day, we hope you join us in taking time to honor the achievements of the labor movement and recommitting to defending workers' rights.
