In the middle of the night on Tuesday, the Supreme Court decided to let Texas’ unconstitutional six-week abortion ban stand, effectively overturning nearly 50 years of precedent set by Roe v. Wade. 

Here’s what the Texas law does:

1. Bans abortions after six weeks, when most women don’t know they’re pregnant
2. Makes no exception for rape or incest
3. Burdens abortion providers and women seeking safe abortions with $10,000 fines and hundreds of thousands of dollars in legal fees

Make no mistake — in practice, this law is a ban on abortion. And by letting this law stand, the Supreme Court is signaling to Republicans in Georgia and across the country that women’s bodily autonomy is no longer legally protected.

The Texas bill is nearly an exact copy of HB 481 — a bill introduced by the Georgia GOP in 2019 and struck down by a district court. But, with last night’s decision, there’s no doubt that the Georgia GOP will try again. And this time, they could succeed.
