John—
After the Texas legislature passed legislation banning abortion after six weeks, healthcare providers in the state filed an emergency petition to block the bill in court.
But the Supreme Court refused to take action, allowing these extreme restrictions to become the law of the land. By refusing to act, the Supreme Court has essentially overturned Roe v. Wade.
Make no mistake: this is a threat to Americans not just in Texas, but all across the country. And the only way to reverse this all-out assault on reproductive freedom is to restore balance to the Supreme Court by passing the Judiciary Act to add four seats.
The Supreme Court’s role is to protect civil liberties, not undermine liberties that are at odds with the justices’ personal beliefs. But this recent development, which effectively overturns Roe v. Wade, is a partisan assault on reproductive freedom and a radical departure from six decades of settled law.
Banning abortion after six weeks is as reckless as it is unjust. Most people don’t know they are pregnant by six weeks; banning abortion at that stage will cause folks in need of abortion care to turn to unlicensed providers, or to attempt to end their pregnancies themselves. This will disproportionately harm economically disadvantaged people, and people of color.
We can’t allow the 6-3 conservative majority on the Court to chip away at the right to choose any longer. That’s why I’m asking for your support:
