September 1, 2021

Greetings,

Thank you for taking the time to check in with me. As your Representative in Washington, I wanted to touch base with you about the recent updates on my work in Congress and in Georgia's Thirteenth Congressional District.

First and foremost, I wanted to address the recent developments in Kabul, Afghanistan, in which 13 U.S. Service Members lost their lives:

Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and families of all those who were killed and injured in this horrific act of violence, and our hearts are broken for our fallen heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation while working to get American civilians and our allies to safety. There is and can be no justification for such attacks.

I will forever be proud and grateful for the work of our extraordinary U.S. Armed Forces and other personnel in Afghanistan who facilitated the evacuation of more than 100,000 American civilians and our at-risk Afghan allies last month.

My team remains committed to working to secure the safe evacuation of remaining U.S. nationals and Afghan partners from Afghanistan as swiftly as possible.

May We Honor Those Who Lost Their Lives Serving Our Nation:

Marine Corps Staff Sgt. Darin T. Hoover, 31, of Salt Lake City, Utah

Marine Corps Sgt. Johanny Rosario Pichardo, 25, of Lawrence, Massachusetts

House Passes H.R. 4, The John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act

Image

Our votes are the most powerful non-violent tools we have to create a more perfect union. As demagogues and bad actors stake their claim in attempts to overturn the voice of the American people and undermine fair, accurate and complete elections, we must insist with renewed fervor that every voter’s voice is heard starting with improved access to the ballot box.

For voters today, voters tomorrow, and all those who sacrificed so we could cast a ballot freely and fairly, I was proud to vote for passage of the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act to restore the full strength of the Voting Rights Act and protect the sacred right to vote for all Americans.

Housing Relief for Renters, Homeowners and Landlords

Recently, the demand for rent, mortgage and utility assistance has been exceptionally high. As your Representative in Washington, I am proud to share that Congress has risen to meet this most challenging moment in our history.

Previously passed federal funding from the CARES Act and the American Rescue Plan Act was distributed to states and municipalities for state and local housing assistance programs. Residents may now apply to programs from their locality, as many programs are already approving applications and distrusting funds.

Currently, programs to assist with rent, mortgage and utility payments are active in Cobb, Clayton, Fulton, and Henry counties. Douglas and Fayette county constituents may apply for assistance from the Georgia Department of Community Affairs website.

Note: All Georgia residents are now eligible to apply for programs from the Georgia Department of Community Affairs in addition to the county program based on their residency (however, they may only receive payments from one program).
