John, this is a devastating blow to the constitutional right to abortion. Texas lawmakers have effectively banned abortion in their state, and the Supreme Court has failed to stop them.
The Texas law prohibits abortions after six weeks of pregnancy -- before most people even know they’re pregnant. But what is particularly sinister is that this law encourages antiabortion vigilantes to sue anyone who helps a pregnant person seeking access to abortion. There is a $10,000 reward for anyone who sues and wins.
Next term, the Supreme Court is set to hear Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, a blockbuster case from Mississippi that could even further weaken Roe v. Wade. Unless Congress immediately passes legislation that expands the Court by four seats, the far-right supermajority on the bench will continue to strip our constitutional right to abortion until there is nothing left.
