A federal court just ruled that the Archdiocese of Indianapolis can fire a Catholic-school guidance counselor for marrying her wife.

The judge claimed that the Catholic church has a “ministerial exception” that allows them to discriminate against LGBTQ+ Americans.

At the Center for Freethought Equality, we know from experience that prioritizing religious special interests is detrimental to all Americans. That's why we're fighting to elect members of Congress who refuse to let Christian nationalism become part of our judicial system. We're confident that, with your help, we can push back against the toxic strain of Christian nationalism within our government.

John, we think the Court's expansion of the “ministerial exception,” which provides immunity to employment discrimination claims from any employee the religious organization determines is in a religious role, is very dangerous. Justice Sonia Sotomayor in her Morrissey-Berru (2020) dissenting opinion expressed concern for the “rights of countless coaches, camp counselors, nurses, social-service workers, in-house lawyers, media-relations personnel, and many others who work for religious institutions. All these employees could be subject to discrimination for reasons completely irrelevant to their employers' religious tenets.” We believe this religious privileging has gone too far, but we haven't heard from you on this issue. We need to hear from at least 100 more freethinkers on this before midnight tonight:
