The COVID-19 pandemic has permanently altered our country's political landscape -- while so many established politicians abandoned their duty to protect their constituents, new, diverse candidates stepped up to fill in the gaps. And one of these newly inspired individuals is Columbia, South Carolina City Council candidate Dr. Aditi Srivastav Bussells.

Dr. Bussells never imagined that she'd be running for office. Her interest in caring for others first led her to earning a Masters of Public Health and later a PhD -- it's safe to say that she's an expert. As soon as the pandemic hit, she realized that her perspective was exactly what her city needed.

She's got some interesting takes on running for office as a South Asian woman in a Southern city and on the role that city governments play in public health -- especially in times of crisis.
