The new Census data released last week is giving us some insight into the redistricting fights ahead across the country. With the GOP needing to flip just five seats to take back the majority, here’s where things stand:

* Many rural communities are losing people to the cities and suburbs, which is bad news for Republicans. They are increasingly reliant on rural voters to win seats, but of the 61 U.S. House districts that lost population, 35 are held by Republicans.

* However, Republicans control the map-making in many growing states like Texas, North Carolina, and Florida, which is bad news for Democrats. Republicans can spread out Democratic voters across districts to dilute their votes and keep seats red.
