Last week, the second round of Child Tax Credit payments went out to American families as part of the American Rescue Plan, the $1.9 trillion stimulus package passed by Democrats in Congress and signed by President Biden in March.
Under the plan, nearly every family in the United States will receive between $3,000 and $3,600 for each child under the age of 18. That means millions of children will be lifted out of poverty — cutting child poverty in half. This is an enormous triumph for working families.
But the vote on the American Rescue Plan also showcased a stark difference between Democratic and Republican priorities. While Democrats voted yes on the bill, every single Republican voted no.
House Republicans claim to be the party of working people. But when it came time for them to prove it by voting to support millions of American families, they showed their true colors.
John, passing legislation that makes peoples’ lives tangibly better — like the American Rescue Plan — is exactly why I came to Congress. But if I’m going to keep doing work like this, I’ll need to win re-election, and the House Democratic majority will need to be preserved. That’s why I have to ask:
Thank you for reading, and thank you for your support. I am so grateful for the opportunity to work on once-in-a-generation legislation to fight poverty, and I am so proud to serve you in Congress.
All my best,
Mondaire
