Today, Social Security turns 86! 

President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Social Security into law in 1935, lifting millions of Americans out of poverty and providing a cushion for the elderly to retire. It’s time we started fighting for Social Security and understanding its role in retirement financial security!

GQP members have continually failed to recognize its importance in the lives of Americans and continue their assault on this much needed program by pushing for massive cuts. It's imperative that we acknowledge that social security isn’t just a retirement program but provides much needed life insurance for millions of elderly Americans and disability insurance protection as well. 

Over 64 million people today collect Social Security benefits. While older Americans make up most of the beneficiaries, another one-fifth of beneficiaries receiving Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) are young survivors of deceased workers.

Social Security is a bedrock of the American economy which comes with guaranteed, progressive benefit that keeps up with increases in the cost of living. Once someone starts receiving Social Security, their benefits increase to keep pace with inflation, helping to ensure that people do not fall into poverty as they age.

Social Security not only helps the elderly but plays a vital role in the lives of our children as well. Nearly 6 million children under age 18 lived in families that received income from Social Security in 2019.

Recent data based on a 2019 Current Population Survey shows that Social Security benefits nearly 4 out of every 10 Americans aged 65 and older who would have incomes below the poverty line. 

We will not lose a program that provides a much needed safety net for millions Americans to a party that does its bidding for the rich and continues its assault on the working class and American values! 

GQP members market themselves as “pro-life” but look for every opportunity to make life more difficult for the common person! What a joke. Americans nationwide have shown how important Social Security is to them and why we can’t afford to lose it!

This is why it’s so important that we continue to fight for Social Security expansion. As GQP leaders look to cut this critical program that millions of Americans depend on now, I’m asking for your support in fighting back! As we celebrate the programs’ 86th year anniversary, it’s up to us to make sure that it’s here to stay.
