Laird Hamilton, the big wave surfer and health and fitness guru (slash nut) lives most days like he’s training for the big event. Of this daily physical push he says, “People always ask me when they see me working out, “What are you training for?” The answer is I’m training for life.” You shouldn’t strive to be Laird Hamilton. He’s a fitness god and you’re but a mortal. But you should take his philosophy to heart. If you want to be there for the kids, for yourself, and get the most out of life— you need to take care of your body. Getting fit is not a goal, but a necessary step that opens the doors to any adventure that comes your way. So, go ahead, and give yourself 20.

The Pinwheel Is The One Move Every Computer Jockey Needs

Hunching over your computer all day creates tension in your neck, shoulders, and upper back. Over time, it leads to loss of mobility. The pinwheel helps release some of that tension. Start out slow and let your arms circle faster as things loosen up.

  1. Stand with your feet hip-width apart.
  2. Keeping your arms straight, raise both of them slowly in front of your body, then overhead, then back behind your body.
  3. Lower them to the ground to make a complete circle. Repeat 10 times, then reverse the circles for 10.
  4. Next, “divide” your arms and have one side circle forward while the other circles backward, 10 times in each direction. This move wakes up your peripheral nervous system, which research shows primes your brain and body to work together for maximum exercise benefits.

A Pair Couples Therapy Exercises to Try at Home
Chances are you’ll learn something new about your partner — and grow your relationship in the process.

1. Hold “State of the Union” Meetings

State of your relationship meetings are weekly (or daily) check-ins to see how you’re both feeling in the relationship. Think of these brief meetups as opportunities to share things you haven’t discussed, issues that need some clarification, or conflicts that need to be resolved. Ideally, each person should have time to share how they’re feeling, uninterrupted.

Why It’s Helpful:
According to San Diego-based marriage and family therapist Dana McNeil, it’s common for couples to have missed bids for connection during the week. Big conversations don’t always feel possible in busy schedules, so it’s important to regularly –– and intentionally –– take stock of how you’re feeling so tension doesn’t grow. “Both partners are CEOs in a relationship, and both have needs and expectations that require space to be talked about in an open and positive environment,” McNeil says.

2. Use “The story I’m telling myself is…” When Arguing

During conflict, it’s easy to project your feelings onto your partner –– but that doesn’t help anyone. Instead of pointing fingers, demonstrate to your partner you’re giving them the benefit of the doubt by using “my story” statements. For example, instead of “You don’t want to spend time with me,” you could say “My story right now is that you don’t want to be with me because I’m too much.”

Why It’s Helpful:
Framing your feelings this way takes ownership of your
experience and perception of the scenario without throwing blame at your
partner, which ultimately gives them the opportunity to share their side so you can work it out together.
