John,

Four years ago, hundreds of white supremacists convened in Charlottesville, Virginia for a violent "Unite the Right Rally." Wielding torches, weapons, and confederate flags, the group gathered and chanted phrases like "white lives matter," "Jews will not replace us," and "blood and soil."

The images of this rally are still burned into many of our brains, even four years later. It is impossible to forget the faces of hatred we saw that day.

We cannot talk about the events of Charlottesville without talking about Heather Heyer, the brave counter-protester who was tragically murdered during the events by a self-proclaimed neo-Nazi. She lost her life fighting for justice and equity for all Americans.

The Charlottesville rally was the result of a rise in racism, xenophobia, and antisemitism in our country -- incited by Donald Trump and his allies. We wish we could say that this was an isolated event, but earlier this year, we once again saw what happens when white supremacists feel emboldened by political leaders.

On January 6, a violent group of white supremacists gathered at our nation's Capitol. As in Charlottesville, they carried weapons and confederate flags and shouted racial slurs at the officers who served that day.

Charlottesville and the Capitol insurrection are a painful reminder of how far we still have to go as a nation to root out racism. But it's impossible to make progress when white supremacists hold positions in our Congress.

We're working to defeat these members of Congress and root out white supremacy from our political system to ensure events like Charlottesville and January 6 never happen again. I hope you'll continue to join us in this important fight.

Thank you,
