Friend,

Four years ago, the nation watched Virginia in horror as white supremacists traveled to Charlottesville to march and spew hatred. They were responsible for the murder of 32-year-old Heather Heyer, who was peacefully protesting against hate, led to the deaths of two Virginia state troopers, Lieutenant H. Jay Cullen and Trooper Berke M. M. Bates, and injured dozens more who bravely stood up to the violent bigotry.

I remember reflecting at the time about how far Virginia had come in recent decades to put division behind us, and how sickening it was to see those displays of fear and bigotry in our Commonwealth.

Though we have worked hard to speak out against violence, racism, and anti-Semitism in the years since that rally, and to honor those whose lives were cut cruelly short, we know that more action is needed to ensure that history doesn’t repeat itself.

I was so proud that on May 20th of this year, President Biden signed the COVID-19 Hate Crimes Act into law, which included provisions from my Khalid Jabara-Heather Heyer NO HATE Act, in order to crack down on hate crimes and white supremacist violence.

We still have a long way to go -- both to heal the scars of our history and to combat the ongoing violence that still plagues our Commonwealth and our country. But we’re making progress, together.

Today, I’m grateful for the dedication and strength of every person who is combating hatred and bigotry, whether it’s in your communities, families, and schools, online, or through local, state, and federal legislation. And I am holding in my heart all those who loved Heather Heyer, Jay Cullen, and Berke Bates. I hope you’ll join me and take a moment to think of those families today.

Thanks for reading,

Tim Kaine
