![]() The most divisive bills in Sacramento, SB 9 and SB 10, are opposed by three out of four Californians, according to a poll by former Obama campaign pollster David Binder.
The new poll found 71% of Californians oppose SB 9, and 75% oppose SB 10.
These are landslide figures. The news came on the heels of an Aug. 7 town hall which drew a 1,100 person crowd from across the state, working to kill the bills when legislators return on Aug. 16.
SB 9 ends single-family zoning almost everywhere, from rural villages like Angels Camp to dense L.A., letting developers build market-rate projects of 6 units where one home stands today.
SB 10 lets nearly every city council in California override CEQA and voter initiatives to let developers build 14-unit projects almost everywhere, from single-family streets in tiny Avalon to crowded San Jose.
Because mainstream media is unaware of key provisions in the bills, it has fallen to community, environmental, homeowner and social justice groups to warn the public. Now we urge legislators to vote NO on bills opposed by 3 of every 4 Californians.
Both bills are opposed by hundreds of city councilmembers, criticized by groups ranging from Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association to the Planning and Conservation League, and opposed by vast Black and Latino homeowner areas in Southern California that are targets of the two bills.
SB 9 and 10 give developers carte blanche to destroy millions of yards, gardens and shade trees; build unbridled density in burn areas; bulldoze historic buildings. All without having to fund the needed water, evacuation routes, power, sewage lines, transit and schools.
Here is the full poll by David Binder Research, funded by Housing is a Human Right. See Section 4, questions 36 and 37, for the final results.
