Yesterday, President Biden announced that he will extend the pause on federal student debt repayment — which was slated to expire in less than eight weeks — until January 31, 2022.

I, along with my progressive colleagues in the House and Senate, had been pushing the President to extend the pause on student loan repayment, and I’m glad that he heeded our calls.

But we can’t stop there. The next step is for the President to cancel student debt. This is a big ask, John, so I’ll need your support:

In New York’s 17th District alone, thousands of young people have been forced to move back in with their parents or take second jobs to pay off appreciating student loan debt. These young people are unable to save money to provide for themselves, start families, purchase homes, or simply prepare for a rainy day — and that’s only gotten worse due to the economic fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Prior to the pandemic, it was tough enough to repay student loans. When you adjust for inflation, wages have been stagnant for decades as the cost of a four-year college degree has skyrocketed over the same time period.

President Biden has the opportunity to free tens of millions of Americans from this burden, but — just as we did with the eviction moratorium and the pause on student loan repayment — we need to put pressure on the White House to make sure it gets done. So I’m asking you to join me:
