Friend,
On this date in 1965, President Lyndon Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act into law. And for nearly half a century, this critical legislation enjoyed bipartisan support and protected all Americans’ right to vote.
The Supreme Court’s decision to dismantle the law in 2013 set off a domino effect of GOP-controlled legislatures systematically making it harder for communities of color to exercise their right to vote.
This trend has reached alarming levels in recent years, culminating on January 6th, 2021 when the nation witnessed the most dangerous attempt of voter disenfranchisement in our history.
Stopping these efforts is of existential importance. And it's why we need to pass comprehensive voting rights legislation in Congress.
We need all Democrats united behind comprehensive voting rights legislation. So today, I'm asking you to add your name to say -- in honor of the 56th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act -- that you support protecting our democracy by passing it into law.
We’ve all seen what’s happening in Republican-controlled states like Texas and Georgia where GOP legislators have rushed to pass voter suppression bills. They have the potential to fundamentally damage the nature of our democracy -- and we need to stop them.
Republicans need to realize that they don’t need to cheat in order to win. Instead, they must become responsive to what voters want and need from their elected officials. In a healthy democracy, disenfranchising your own constituents is not acceptable.
Simply put, passing comprehensive voting rights legislation isn’t just the right thing to do, it’s the necessary thing to do to stop the major ongoing attack on people’s right to vote.
We need to keep fighting -- and I need you with me. Please add your name to say you’ll join me in fighting for the passage of comprehensive voting rights legislation.
Thank you,
Tim Kaine
