Earlier this week, I joined other progressive members of the House outside the Capitol in protest of the expiration of the national eviction moratorium.
As many as 11 million Americans were at risk of becoming homeless due to a lack of political courage — in the midst of a deadly pandemic and the Delta variant surging.
I’m so proud to share that, in the face of public pressure from my colleagues and myself, President Biden extended the eviction moratorium for 60 days.
President Biden had incorrectly insisted that unilaterally extending the eviction moratorium would be unconstitutional. Meanwhile, most of Congress had gone home on recess. But my progressive colleagues and I refused to take no for an answer.
John, this is personal to me. I, like millions of Americans, have experienced housing insecurity in my lifetime. Many policymakers don’t know what that’s like — and if they did, they never would have let the eviction moratorium expire in the first place.
Once again, I’d like to commend President Biden on his choice to reinstate the eviction moratorium — but I remain committed to challenging the White House when it must go further to act in the best interests of working Americans, just as I do House Republicans.
Standing up to both the House GOP and members of my own party — including the President — to extend the eviction moratorium wasn’t easy, but it was the right thing to do.
I’m in Congress to challenge the status quo and support the most vulnerable Americans — so if you’d like to support me in that fight, please click here to make a contribution to my re-election campaign.
