Dear John,

Last week, Minnesota broke its record for worst air quality as smoke from Canadian wildfires drifted south across our state, turning our skies yellow and making it difficult to breathe. The climate crisis is here in Minnesota - and one of the most meaningful opportunities to take action for people, clean air, and a liveable future is in Minnesota, too. If you’re new to the fight to stop the Line 3 tar sands pipeline, you can learn more and get involved here.

We were all reminded of the power of care, direct action, and organizing this week, when Cori Bush’s demonstration on the front steps of the U.S. Capitol pressured President Biden to extend the eviction moratorium, keeping over 11 million renters in their homes. Speaking about this collective victory, she said, “this is a group of people who just love people and know that it’s our work as humans, regardless of title, to end human suffering.”

Love is at the center of our work to make sure all of our neighbors can access stable housing, to stop Line 3 and invest in a clean energy future, and to create systems of public safety that center people and health - and value all of our lives.

It was also care, love, and organizing that led over 20,000 Minneapolis residents to sign the Yes 4 Minneapolis people’s petition to change the charter and create a new Department of Public Safety. We celebrated our coalition launch on Tuesday, and reminded each other that we have the wisdom and power to imagine a future that’s better than the status quo that’s failing us now. TakeAction leader Claudia said, “We deserve better than neglect at best, and abuse at worst.”  We love ourselves and our neighbors enough to create something new that protects all of us.

That same love is at the center of the fight to stop Line 3. Hundreds of people have already been arrested for pipeline opposition, and local police forces are being paid directly by the Canadian corporation responsible for the pipeline to brutalize peaceful water protectors. We know the power of our collective action and have seen it pay off in our fights for housing security and public safety - and we need to keep putting that energy in the fight for treaty rights, water, and climate.

Take action to stop Line 3 however you can - pressure President Biden to act, donate to bail funds for water protectors putting their bodies on the line through direct action, and join them on the front lines if you’re able. This fight takes all of us, and we know that together, we can win.
