John,
On Sunday night, and again on Monday, I stayed outside the Capitol until the early hours of the morning with Reps. Cori Bush, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and others to protest the end of the eviction moratorium.
I’d like the chance to explain how we got to this point, and what happens next, but first:
Okay, here’s what’s happened. The eviction moratorium first passed in March of 2020 as part of the CARES Act, and has been extended several times since to protect Americans from losing their homes during the COVID-19 pandemic.
But on Saturday, the moratorium expired — and because neither Congress nor the White House took action to extend it, evictions have begun.
Right now, approximately 1 in 6 renters are behind on their rent payments — so if we don’t extend the moratorium, millions could be evicted. That would be inhumane in any context, but as the Delta variant surges, it’s nothing short of a public health crisis.
Stopping mass evictions will require immediate action, so please:
The White House is shirking responsibility by insisting that there’s nothing it can do to stop the ongoing crisis. That’s simply not true. The White House has extended the moratorium before and can do so again.
But if President Biden won’t act, it’s absolutely necessary that Congress does. That’s why, despite the fact that we’re on August recess, I’m still in DC fighting to extend the moratorium and put a stop to evictions. Thank you, as always, for supporting me in this fight.
Onward,
Mondaire
