I was surprised to see reports last month suggesting that myself and other UK Government Ministers have been engaging heavily with representatives of industries which are important to Banff and Buchan and to the rest of Scotland!

I make no apology for engaging with precisely those businesses and sectors which are key to the economy, jobs and our communities – including agriculture, fisheries and energy.

As well as meeting with trade bodies and industry leaders, I also regularly work with individual organisations and employers in my constituency on a one-to-one basis on more specific issues.

Since my previous newsletter, Scotland has moved into Level 0 COVID restrictions.

This has largely been made possible by the fantastic and world leading UK-wide vaccine programme. But in recent weeks the uptake of the vaccine, especially among younger age groups, has been dropping.

News of 50,000 missed vaccine appointments across NHS Grampian in four months, shows that something needs to be done to encourage more younger people to come forward for their jabs.

This is not a matter of supply but one of engagement and take-up.

As many people as possible getting the vaccine is the best way out of the pandemic and – although vaccination is not mandatory – I encourage anyone over 18 who hasn’t already had their jabs to do so.

More recently we heard the tragic news that the numbers of deaths related to drug use in Scotland has increased yet again, reaching a shameful record-high of 1,339 in 2020.

33 of these deaths were in Aberdeenshire and although figures are not as high as elsewhere in Scotland, this is still a huge increase (8 in 2014) and of course, any death is one too many.

As we saw with Covid, I believe that this is a crisis best served on a UK-wide basis and I am keen to ensure that both of our Governments work together to address it.
 
I support my colleagues at Holyrood in proposing a "Right to Recovery" Bill.

The UK Parliament is now in summer recess and I am looking forward – particularly with reduced restrictions – to getting out and about in the constituency, visiting local businesses, charities, local community organisations and speaking to constituents.

I continue to be available for virtual surgery appointments – by phone or online – as I have been throughout lockdown, and from 9 August, I will be increasing the number of physical face-to-face surgeries I will be offering in Banff and Mintlaw, with appropriate hygiene and COVID-secure measures in place for everyone’s safety.

David calls on local MSPs to back Right to Recovery Bill  

Banff and Buchan MP David Duguid has called on local SNP MSPs to get behind the Scottish Conservative bill which would enshrine in law that everyone can access the treatment they need, including a residential rehabilitation place.
 
In 2020, deaths from drug misuse rose to 1,339 and means the drug death rate is now more than three-and-a-half times that of England and Wales.
