What was life like for women in America the year that you were born?

For us, looking back 50 years it is sobering to see how hard we had to fight just to be taken seriously and included in decisions about our own lives. Our fight for equity continues. We know that together we can achieve great things -- because we already have.

Here's a bit more about how we will fight for women and families this year. I hope you can help us in this movement.

Subject: How will you celebrate?

Dear
John,

What does it mean to be 50?

When we started in 1971, the notion of a "woman's place" was not an overtly sexist, archaic expression. It was a common mindset that women were inferior to men -- and our nation's legal system perpetuated this discriminatory and oppressive state.

Here are just some of the ways our nation's laws at the time denied women dignity and justice on the basis of sex:

* Banks could refuse you a credit card in your own name.
* You could not take legal action against sexual harassment in the workplace.
* You had to pay more than a man for the same health insurance coverage.
* You could be refused a prescription for birth control pills if you weren't married.

It was against this sexist backdrop that the National Partnership opened its doors -- 50 years ago this week - with the goal of gaining equal legal status for women in the United States.

We've come a long way!

We have celebrated so many milestones over the past 50 years, and we know there's much more work to be done.

Donate now to our birthday fund. Help us create the next decade of turning points for women and families.

None of the wins happened without a fight. And there are still people in power who would take away gains we've made. But, after 50
years, we are battle tested and more prepared than ever to confront the challenges and break new ground.

The National Partnership is a trusted voice on Capitol Hill. Elected leaders and decision-makers turn to us when they need policy advice. We are honored every day to lift up your stories to persuade our leaders to prioritize the needs of women and families.

Together, we will secure the fundamental right of all women to control whether and when to become a parent, including equitable access to abortion care. We will demand comprehensive, high-quality maternal health care that eliminates the racial gaps in maternal mortality and outcomes.  We will enact a national paid family and medical leave program that benefits every working person and ensures that women are not penalized when they care for their families or their own health.

At 50, we also know we simply cannot achieve gender equity without fighting for racial justice.

There has never been a more pressing time to build a just world, and we are putting women and families of color at the center of our work.

Donate today to grow our strong voice for women and families.

This is the year to recognize caregiving as an essential part of our American infrastructure. The devaluation of caregiving work, paid and unpaid, is rooted in racism and sexism and disproportionately harms women and workers of color. We know that #CareCan'tWait, and we are advocating for investment in the essential caregiving infrastructure that women, families and our economy need to
prosper.

Since our founding in 1971, the National Partnership has had one mission: to create a world where all women have the freedom, opportunity and dignity to live to our fullest potential.

During this time of unprecedented uncertainty, disruption and change, the National Partnership is working tirelessly to make sure that those living on the economic margins are not forgotten.

We are in this for the long-haul. And we hope we can count on your commitment this year.

Celebrate our 50th birthday with a special donation today.
